"Stan, Lydia - hold back on those glasses of champagne. I'm seeing pink elephants everywhere!" January 1999, at the Pink Elephant Jazz and Piano Bar, Hotel Post, in Zermatt, Switzerland. |

He says he's one of my biggest fans, but I had to tell him to keep his hands to himself. April 1999, in Bergen, Norway, in a park at Fløyen, overlooking the city. |
It was a gala night in Stockholm society: Olympic athletes, politicians and the Swedish royal family - King Carl Gustav, Queen Silvia and Princess Lilian. And, as you can see, me (that would be the upper right corner). I was performing for the private party at the Grand Hotel when the photographer from Dam magazine caught Olympic swimmer Lars Frölander sitting in on one of my tunes. (Okay, you caught me - it's posed...) November 2001. |
From 1996: Ray Glover and I were performing at the Pink Elephant in Zermatt when Phil Collins came in to arrange a birthday party for his manager. He ended up sitting in with us, then later joining us at another gig in Geneva. |
Taking bows on the stage of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria. My friend Ivan Iankov (left) created "How Like a Winter" - a haunting score to back 15 Shakespearean sonnets - and I recorded the alto vocals for it with him during 2000. To support the recording, I toured Bulgaria for two weeks with soprano Diliana Georgieva (right) and Ivan as pianist. This particular performance was for the diplomatic community in Sofia. June 2001. |
Just resting my new walking shoes at Troldhaugen, home of world-famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. The home, now a museum, lies on a promontory. To my right, a path leads down to the water, where Grieg and his wife Nina are entombed in a crypt. To my left, another path leads down to the studio where Grieg wrote many of his more renowned works. Or, as my traveling companion put it, "In that direction, he's composing - and in the other, he's decomposing..." I hit him. Bergen, April 1999. |
In the early '90s, I put together an all-star concert in Sweden, featuring such luminaries as drummer Ed Thigpen, percussionist Henry Gibson, bass player Mads Winding and pianist Jimmie Woode, among others. This shot has nearly everyone on stage for a jam. |
Legendary Jimmie Woode joined me on stage during the concert. He graced us with his music for almost a century before his death in March 2005. You may know of him from his work with Billie Holliday and Duke Ellington, among others. I know that he went nearly 100 years before having his first Burger King Whopper. |
If I'm dancing, it must be the midnight show in the Atlantis Lounge on the Silja Serenade. And it is! May 1998 - and that's Jeffrey (formerly of downstate Illinois, but now Flekkefjord, Norway) up front on your left and Maria, front and center... |
Here I am on the arm of one of my favorite pianists, Åke Johansson. In case your Swedish is a little rusty, we were performing for the Kinds Rotary Club, which was celebrating the 90th anniversary of Rotary International. February 1995. |
I was in Chicago for some recording sessions and got together briefly with old friend Pennington McGee. Although he's one of the top percussionists you'll ever run into, he devotes much of his time these days to painting, and teaching others to paint and draw. He asked me to close my eyes, then presented me with this painting he'd done years earlier, around the time we were performing as part of the group Panama. What a treat! |

New braids and a one-time-only outfit, courtesy of my friend Arya Ylitalo, who also did my makeup. Anders Nilsson was the photographer. From one of my promotion kits. |
